ABSTRACT. I decided in the early stages of the research that I would try to let the data direct theoretical exploration, and this paper is one outcome of this process (particular attention is given to reviewing recent empirical evidence on the topic). The purpose of this article is to describe the findings from this review and to discuss implications and future directions for practice-related research with the impact and success of career-development functions, the extent to which people perceive themselves and the organization realistically, the career maturity and development of individuals with disabilities, the importance of reputation in the careers of professionals, the individual’s relationship with the work role, and the negative impact of perceived career plateau. pp. 285–290
