ABSTRACT. This paper provides four contexts for philosophy of education and its relation to economic policy: The ancient the tripos of philosophy, politics and education; Scottish political economy based on the work of Hutcheson, Hume, Ferguson and Smith; Foucault’s neoliberal governmentality; and liberal political economy. While not exhaustive these contexts are provided as a basis for entertaining the relationship between education and economy. The paper is conceived of as brief statement to provoke and elicit the views and criticisms of other invited to comment. pp. 17–26
