ABSTRACT. The growth of descriptive and explanatory studies relevant to political philosophy as well as normative work in other disciplines has complicated study of the history of political philosophy. Political philosophy tends to aspire to an account of an appropriately structured and functioning community, with its main constitutive institutions and values.
