ABSTRACT. The aim of the present paper is twofold: on the one hand, to investigate the landscape of the focus particle ‘only’ in Romanian given the fact that Romanian exhibits two such focus particles, one whose use is mainly limited to assertive contexts and another one which is restricted to contexts that make use of not–classical negation; and on the other hand to present the results we obtained in an experiment with native speakers of Romanian focusing on the speakers’ creativity manifested in the assessment of various contexts containing the two polarity items. pp. 163–179.

Keywords: polarity sensitivity; polarity items; “only”; negation; focus particle; quantification
