Abstract. Harold Bloom’s J. D. Salinger (1999; Bloom’s major short story writers) encourages readers to not only revisit literary works by famous American writer J. D. Salinger (1919–2010), but also delve into the mysteries that have not yet been uncovered in prior research. Although containing as few as eighty-six pages, this volume overviews many of Salinger’s representative stories, providing readers with insights into old and new topics. The volume removes a potential bottleneck in Salinger studies, providing a massive boost especially to novice readers who are embarking on the exploration of Salinger’s short fiction. Although some expert researchers might find this compact volume less detailed or thorough than expected, their keen appreciation will not miss the excellence of the book, which guides them to more expansive and meticulous research of their own on unsung significant topics that are absent from the editor’s standpoint.
