ABSTRACT. This paper is devoted to the situation of women in Romania during a period which extends from the time of the principalities, followed by the Great Union of 1859 and the War for Independence of 1877–1879, through to the instauration of the Romanian Unitary State in 1918, which opened the road to modernization in the social, economic, and cultural realms. The period under study here left unmistakable marks on literature, creating the conditions for the late ascendancy of realism in Romanian literature. A research of the woman’s situation in the Romanian principalities is based on the observation that the mid-century was marked by turning-point events involving the (re)-unification of the country – the Great Union of 1859 in Romania – War of Independence 1877–1879, Romanian Unitary State in 1918 which opened the road to modernization for important social, economic and cultural changes and left their unmistakable marks on literature creating the conditions for the late ascendancy of realism. pp. 147–163
