ABSTRACT. This paper introduces the concept of a "singleton" and suggests that this concept is useful for formulating and analyzing possible scenarios for the future of humanity. Singletons could be good, bad, or neutral. One reason for favoring the development of a singleton (of a good type) is that it would solve certain fundamental coordination problems that may be unsolvable in a world that contains a large number of independent agencies at the top level.
