THE LIBERAL STATE AND ITS SYSTEM OF SECULAR LAW
ELENA PARASCHIVABSTRACT. The mainstay of the paper is formed by an analysis of the connections between secular legal thought and Christian doctrine, the specific boundaries and distributions of religious liberties in a secular society, Islamic responses to the modern liberal conception of religious freedom, the Roman Empire’s imperial-hierarchical form of laws and legal system, and the connection between Church doctrine and secular law. This study is grounded in the considerable body of scholarship examining the increased prominence and visibility of religion, the religious provisions of the Peace of Westphalia, the Egyptian notion of public order, Locke’s rectificatory justice, and the political theology of the new order of Christian states. pp. 132–137
