PEDAGOGIES OF THE IMAGE: ECONOMIES OF THE GAZE
MICHAEL A. PETERSABSTRACT. This paper investigates the changes to visual culture and education in the shift from industrial to social media and proposes a critical education that rests on the pedagogy of the image by reference to the work of Sartre, Lacan and Foucault on the history of the ‘gaze’, John Berger on Ways of Seeing, Guy Debord on the ‘spectacle’, Jean Baudrillard on simulacra, and Deleuze on cinema. These ‘pedagogies of the image’ provide a sort of collective repertoire of tools for analysis in an age dominated by the image and a cinematic mode of production. pp. 42–61
