LEGAL DIMENSIONS OF SECULARISM: CHALLENGES AND PROBLEMS
RAFAEL PALOMINOABSTRACT. Due to both increased international collaboration among scholars in the field of religion in the law and emerging conflicts around the globe with religious overtones, there is an urgent need to establish a common phraseology for this field. The word “secularism” is commonly heard in these discourses yet the meaning of “secularism” is at times far from clear. This article presents a thorough examination of the definition of secularism, and addresses some of the more salient dilemmas that are faced by legal systems on national and regional levels within the field of religion and secular law. In view of these compelling legal problems, the paper concludes by presenting two major approaches with which to face these issues. pp. 208–225
