ABSTRACT. The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the use and role of Roman law, the character of Roman republican government, the nature and development of Roman public law, the role of Roman law in international law, and the functions that Roman law can have in the formation and elaboration of international law. The results of the current study converge with prior research on the historical role of Roman law, the defense in politically charged criminal cases, Roman perceptions of the role of government, and the extent and nature of the power of Roman government. pp. 146–151
