ABSTRACT. The theory that we shall seek to elaborate here puts considerable emphasis on the diverse nature of food products, the increasing volatility of the food marketplace, the competitive nature of food marketing, the food processing and packaging industries, and environmental threats to the food economy. This paper presents the results of a survey illustrating the growth in food output, the availability of affordable food, key facets of the global food economy, shifting patterns of food consumption, and the variability in food production. pp. 185–190
