Schumann observes that images have the unique property of forcing the viewer to generate descriptions. Smith states that the tabloidization of the media represents the shifts in mainstream media from critical reportage to a more "dumbed-down" version of media products. On Bird's reading, we must understand the value of dramatic, narrative news in everyday life.
