ABSTRACT. Kant's apperceptive relation of representations to the identity of the subject is the representationalist equivalent of the idea of the "unity of the proposition". Kant identifies the a priori as his primary concern in the Critiques, and seems in general unconcerned by skepticism about empirical knowledge. Kant's assertion that we cannot know things in themselves follows from his claim that we can know only the relational, and not the intrinsic properties of things.
