ABSTRACT. Sartre views the non-positional self-awareness within pre-reflective consciousness as a form of self-consciousness (first-order outer-directed conscious states are also self-conscious states). Sartre offers a notion of the world as a system of objects where meanings and values are organized in light of the individual's project. Sartre distinguishes between positional (or thetic) consciousness and non-positional (or non-thetic) consciousness: For Sartre, the self is a kind of construct only.
