ABSTRACT. We have sought in the present paper to emphasize the role of cities in the globalisation of the economy, the expanding presence of cities in global networks, and the dynamics of urban systems. Ducruet and Lee present a typology of port-urban relations and then propose a means of transcribing every type into simple quantitative expressions. On Scott and Storper’s reading, cities and regions are critical foundations of the development process as a whole. Rozenblat and Pumain examine how a specific kind of inter-urban connection is created through the location process of multinational firms in European cities. Sassen points out that the rise of cities as strategic economic spaces is the consequence of the urbanizing of a growing range of economic activities. (pp. 158–163)
