Internet of Things Digital Twins, 3D Virtual Simulation and Remote Sensing Technologies, and Predictive Maintenance and Synthetic Data Tools in Urban Geopolitics
Michael Walsh*ABSTRACT. In this article, I cumulate previous research findings indicating that Internet of Things sensing infrastructures, predictive modeling algorithms, and data-driven planning technologies configure digital twin cities. I contribute to the literature on urban sensing and data-driven planning technologies, visual analytics tools, and augmented reality algorithms by showing that smart city governance necessitates real-time Internet of Things data, simulation modeling and virtual simulation tools, and urban sensing technologies. Throughout June 2022, I performed a quantitative literature review of the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases, with search terms including “urban geopolitics” + “Internet of Things digital twins,” “3D virtual simulation and remote sensing technologies,” and “predictive maintenance and synthetic data tools.” As I inspected research published between 2021 and 2022, only 180 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria. By eliminating controversial findings, outcomes unsubstantiated by replication, too imprecise material, or having similar titles, I decided upon 34, generally empirical, sources. Data visualization tools: Dimensions (bibliometric mapping) and VOSviewer (layout algorithms). Reporting quality assessment tool: PRISMA. Methodological quality assessment tools include: AXIS, Dedoose, ROBIS, and SRDR.
