ABSTRACT. The growing economic success of many developing countries in the production of high value products and services has challenged many of the basic assumptions of a Western-biased global era. What is clear is that BRIC countries, particularly China and India, are moving up the value chain to compete with advanced countries in value-added production. In this issue of Knowledge Cultures, we explore the ways in which education policy is impacted by globalization across the BRICs. What role does education policy play in the growth and development of newly industrializing economies (NIEs)? How might education mitigate the broad challenges facing NIEs? pp. 25–31

Keywords: education policy, development, BRICs, economy, globalization
