ABSTRACT. This paper draws on a substantial body of theoretical and empirical research on smart infrastructure sensors, virtual and augmented reality tools, big data-driven urban analytics, and urban modeling and simulation algorithms. In this research, prior findings were cumulated indicating that image processing computational and remote sensing algorithms, context awareness and big data management tools, and bio-sensing and actuation systems articulate interactive digital worlds. A quantitative literature review of ProQuest, Scopus, and the Web of Science was carried out throughout July 2023, with search terms including “Internet of Things-based smart city environments” + “urban simulation modeling and visual data mining tools,” “image processing computational and remote sensing algorithms,” and “digital twinning and geospatial mapping technologies.” As research published between 2022 and 2023 was inspected, only 161 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria, and 20 mainly empirical sources were selected. Data visualization tools: Dimensions (bibliometric mapping) and VOSviewer (layout algorithms). Reporting quality assessment tool: PRISMA. Methodological quality assessment tools include: AMSTAR, CASP, Nested Knowledge, PICO Portal, SRDR+, and Systematic Review Accelerator.

Keywords: urban simulation modeling; visual data mining; image processing; remote sensing; digital twinning; geospatial mapping; Internet of Things; smart city environment
