RATIONALE FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLS
TIMOTHY DAVISABSTRACT. The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and with that comes the need for a curriculum that prepares students for today’s world. The skills needed for success in this century have changed from previous generations. Students need to graduate high school with a greater understanding of the world they enter, and the concept of global citizenship education provides a necessary lens for students to be introduced to the challenges and opportunities involved in globalization. By examining the meaning and influence of internationalization and globalization, I will propose that it is vital for students to graduate high school with the knowledge of what it entails to be a “global citizen.” Included in this study will be a rationale for teaching global citizenry and a proposed course syllabus for a secondary level globalization course. pp. 37–46
